3 Tips When Hiring Your Wedding Photographer

You find your soul mate… You choose the perfect wedding dress… Your cake is to die for, and you make no exceptions on the venue.

Today is the day… The flowers have arrived… The decor is marvelous… The food is spectacular and the party has just begun.

You’ve invested so much in making every detail perfect…

What about your photography?

***

There is so much planning a bride must do and, more often than not, there never seems to be enough time to get everything that needs to be done, done – but by some miracle, it always does. Whether you have a professional wedding planner, your bridesmaids, or a close family member, there is always someone to help make your day everything you dreamed it would be. My question to you is, will it be captured the way you remembered?

I was reading a blog post from a fellow photographer named Vanessa Dewson titled, “Avoid Hiring A Cheap Wedding Photographer“, and she made an excellent point in her post, “Avoid Hiring a Cheap Wedding Photographer.” She says, “It [photography] will be your only lasting visual reminder of your day…” I couldn’t agree more with Vanessa. She also points out that if your spending a good chunk of change on all the details of your wedding, you best not settle for snapshots. Lesson One: Close your eyes and imagine.

A few weeks earlier, I was out in Toronto with a friend from London. We get together often just to go shoot together and catch-up. We started talking about wedding photography over lunch when he was scrolling though some of my work on my iPhone when he said, “Dude, we spent $5,000.00 on our wedding photography and the pictures suck! I wish I had known you were doing weddings when we were getting married.” At that point, my heart sunk and I knew I had to do something about it. How could I avoid hearing such heart aches in the future? After all, this isn’t the first comment I have heard like this. Lesson Two: Research.

Going back just a little further, about a week before meeting with my London friend, he sent me a link to listen to a podcast, TWIP Episode 128. This episode featured a skit on wedding photography, the industry professionals, the emergents, and the weekend warriors. A large amount of this podcast discussed the $500.00 wedding and it’s pros and cons (although, there seemed to be more of the latter albeit), but the underlying point, in my opinion, is realizing that before you discuss price, you really need to write down your values and desires and the discuss who will best capture these the way you want at your wedding. Lesson Three: Meet your photographer.

Listed above, are my three lessons that will help any and every bride-to-be find her dream photographer! For the next three weeks, I am going to post a blog on each lesson, offering tips and suggestions to help you capture the wedding of your dreams. Check back next week for Lesson One: Close your eyes and imagine.
